Christian Education at Community Church
Christian education takes many forms at Community Church – from weekly
Sunday school classes, to evening youth group meetings, to fun seasonal
fellowship events for the whole family. Young families make up an especially
vibrant and growing contingent of our congregation so many different
learning and fellowship opportunities are available for all ages.
Sunday Mornings
Most Sunday mornings, children and youth will sit with their parents
through the first part of worship, which will usually include a short sermon
and/or story directed specifically at the children. After the first verse of
the second hymn, children and youth are invited to leave the sanctuary and
join their age-specific Sunday school classes. Classes are divided up the
following way: Pre-K&K (age 3,4,5), grades 1&2, grades 3&4, grades 5&6,
grades 6,7,8. We also have nursery care available in the upstairs room.
Sunday school lessons generally begin from short biblical passages and then
move into broader religious themes that they give rise to. Art/craft
projects and games are often incorporated into the lesson. The curriculum
currently in use follows the revised common lectionary, which means that the
lessons taught in Sunday school are based on the same scripture passages
that are at the center of adult worship. This allows families to share
meaningful reflections together, after the service, on what each has learned
or thought about over the course of that morning. Following worship and
Sunday school, everyone is invited to the fellowship hour in Frazier Hall
for snacks, and juice/coffee.
If you are attending Community Church for the first time with children or
youth, please introduce yourself either to one of the deacons or to Luke
Higgins (Director of Christian Education who can usually be found in his
office off of Frazier Hall), and we would be more than happy to provide you
with any orientation you might need!

Youth Group – Junior High school and High school
Community Church’s Junior High Youth Group is open to young people
in 5th – 8th grade. It meets on a regular basis every other Sunday evening
from 5-7 pm. Our meetings generally include the following: some fun
ice-breaker / community building games, sharing dinner together (usually
pizza and raw veggies on the side), and a closing “sacred circle” where
young people have an opportunity to share pieces of their lives and support
each other in prayer and song. No particular religious commitments are
required of those who attend youth group – just an open mind and a
willingness to listen!
Over the course of the year the Youth Group is involved in many other
exciting events as well including (but not limited to) service projects,
wilderness hikes, lock-ins, and a Mission Trip in the spring.
The Senior High Youth Group (grades 9-12) meets more sporadically
at this point in time, usually for special outings, meetings or trips. In
the past these have included hiking excursions, sleep-overs, and Mission
Trips.
Vacation Bible School
During the summer we hold a one-week long Vacation Bible School which is
widely attended by the members of the church and their friends in the
community. It is a fun-filled week of living out the biblical stories in
exciting and meaningful ways appropriate to each of the ages involved.
Students from Pre-Kindergarten to 6th grade are invited to participate.
Students in 7th grade and up are invited to attend as teachers’ aids /
helpers.
Special Events
Many special intergenerational events come up over the course of the
year, including our annual Shrove Tuesday celebration in February, our
Easter Egg Hunt the Saturday before Easter, our Rally Sunday picnic in the
September, and our biannual Family Movie Nights. Events such as these
usually include food, fellowship, music, and games for all ages.
